Symposium in Hannover, Germany in October 2026

The Volkswagen Foundation Symposium on Wealth Perspectives was held in Hannover, Germany.

The symposium "Perspectives on Wealth 2026" at Schloss Herrenhausen in Hannover brought together Wealth & Space and 14 more projects funded within the initiative. The projects explore the global phenomenon of wealth from a wide range of perspectives – from land ownership and land acquisition in the Global South to the impact of wealth on social cohesion and wealth as a social relationship. Michael Janoschka, Guadalupe Sátiro, Michael Lukas, Sérgio Sauer and Corinna Hölzl presented  the project and preliminary findings from our research in Chile, Brazil and Mexico. The lively discussions proved that the intended shift in perspective – from poverty research to wealth research – is gaining traction. Take aways for our Wealth & Space research: We can make a valuable contribution to wealth research by drawing on our in-depth studies on wealth accumulation and power dynamics as  well as our science communication efforts in the framework of our Observatory for Geographies of Wealth to be launched this year.
