Territopoly – Development of an interactive board game about extractivism and power in the Global South
Designed by James Harper (game developer at Tampere University), Corinna Hölzl, Michael Lukas and David Kornbluth (Wealth & Space team).
The Game
Territopoly is a strategy game about power struggles and political decisions in a resource-rich country of the Global South. Two powerful entrepreneurs compete to exploit natural resources and control territories. Two governors support them, but a brave group of activists stands in their way. Meanwhile, an influential media mogul decides who is right and shapes public opinion. Players take on one of these roles and must act strategically, as sudden events such as natural disasters, corruption scandals, or economic crises can change everything at any moment.
Our intention
Territopoly addresses current debates on extractivism and wealth, socio-ecological transformation, power asymmetries and alternative development pathways. Through interactive and fun play sessions for up to six participants, Territopoly creates a framework in which playing becomes a starting point for knowledge production and critical engagement with extractivism and wealth concentration, global social and environmental inequalities, political dilemmas and socio-ecological transformation.
Funding
Territopoly has been developed with the support of the British Academy and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and has been created as part of the Wealth & Space research project.

Travelling Exhibition
Geography of Wealth in Yucatán - Changing the narratives towards buen vivir.
In the framework of Geographies of Wealth. Platform for Critical Research on Territorial Power, particular attention is paid to how processes of capital accumulation produce distinctive features of regions and territories in Latin America and how this shaping of spaces affects and violates human, social and environmental rights, as well as the quality of life of local communities.
With the aim to contribute to just social and ecological transformations in Yucatán and Latin America, Mundo y Conciencia presented an “Interactive Exhibition on Geography and Wealth in Yucatán”, raising awareness and sharing, both in Mérida and in local communities in the interior of the state, and nationally through forums, in-person events and online, certain realities that will enable us to understand, reflect upon and propose networks for change and awareness.
Mundo y Conciencia strives at understanding development narratives, bringing them to the fore, conceptualising them, sharing them widely, and continuing to build networks that make a difference, shifting the narrative towards life-affirming projects rather than extractive projects aimed at accumulating wealth and consolidating economic elites in Yucatán, Mexico.
Public Panel "Geografía de la Riqueza y Territorio" in Mérida
As part of the meeting in Mérida, the forum “Geography of Wealth and Territory” took place at UNAM – Dragones Campus. The event provided a space for interdisciplinary exchange on how wealth is produced, distributed, and experienced within Latin American territories. Emphasis was placed on the relevance of collaborative research perspectives and the need to advance toward developing a Latin American Observatory of Geographies of Wealth. Participants included representatives from universities in Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Germany, as well as members of organizations working in social and environmental justice. We thank CEPHCIS-UNAM for hosting and supporting this event.
